The red and the gold and the grasses
These days when the sun hangs low for long hours - the picture taking is easy. Lots of golden glowing light, and you notice things now that were shrouded in greenery before - praying mantis cases, red fruits... old tires and french fry containers, of course, but for the sake of poetry we just won't mention those. Oops, I couldn't help it. Me, always with the if-you-can't-say-anything-nice-then-don't... well-darn-I-already-did.
We've taken a long morning walk the last two days, in between coffee-and-email and getting-down-to-the-real-work-of-the-day, and it's been so nice. We talk house design and tally up the number of things there are to do, then attempt to compress and compact and contort those things into a manageable plan for the next year. It can't be done, I tell you! Oh well, forge ahead anyhoo.
It's fun times, the planning and plotting. If anyone cares to share an idea for something they'd include in their dream house... I'd love to hear it! It can be outlandish and unaffordable - sometimes dreams are. Or totally practical - they can be that, too.

I think you're already planning on this: my dream home would have a root cellar for sure.
hi Zoe, I enjoy your blog and your drawings and I envy you the opportunity to start from scratch with a house! I have spent my more than sixty years living in other peoples designs. Often lovely but never with an artist in their plans. here are some of my wish list things:
1. rooftop or other elevated space that is accessible, not slippery, and you can go there for a sunrise or just to be above it all! even with old knees.
2. dedicated studio with good light and from which you can still see what's going on - not too isolated
3. great mud room with room for incoming garden harvests as well as sink, storage for outdoor muddy stuff, and extra space for storing supplies for all unexpected projects, & boot warmer
4. extra suite with bathroom and own entrance for if you need to rent or have a caretaker or lots of guests
5. permaculture approach to immediate surroundings
6. water accessible on all sides of house and an outdoor sink with hot water and storage and work space
keep up your wonderful drawings!
I agree. Hard to imagine a mudroom that is too large or has too many hooks and shelves. A boot warmer and sink would surely be luxurious.
The laundry should be on the same floor that the clothes are kept on.
A big deck!
And make it close to your mother.
Excellent suggestions, all! Thank you. Boot warmer... yes! I would sit on it all day. Especially today. Brr.
I'd love to hear what YOUR ideas are, Miss Zoe! Beautiful photos, as usual...
A window that catches morning winter sun, with enough room for a table and two or three chairs and a big pot of rosemary.
I like the idea of an elevated space and the root cellar and mudroom are great suggestions.
I don't think windows are ever a good spot to go cheap.
